If your garden bakes in the summer sun like mine does, adding a bit of shade can make all the difference—especially for raised beds and heat-sensitive crops. I built this 8 ft x 10 ft shade structure, standing 8 feet tall, to protect my plants from intense heat. It worked so well, I built another for a new grow area.
This setup is semi-permanent, easy to assemble, and designed to install directly on soil using rebar for stability. If you’re placing this on concrete, just be sure to weigh it down well to prevent it from shifting or tipping in high winds.
🔧 Note on height: EMT conduit comes in 10 ft lengths, so your shade structure can be up to 10 ft tall and as wide as 10ft by 10ft if desired. I chose 8 ft to fit my garden space—but feel free to adjust the height and dimension based on your space and needs. You can make it as big as 10ft x 10ft x 10ft

🛠️ Tools You’ll Need:
- Hammer
- Gloves
- Pipe cutter
- Tape measure
- Marker
- Spray paint (optional)
- Bungee cords or zip ties
📦 Materials List:
- (4) 3/4 in. x 10 ft. EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing)
- (4) 3/4 in. x 8 ft. EMT (vertical poles — for 8 ft tall structure)
- (4) 3-way canopy fittings
- (4) 1/2 in. x 3 ft. rebar
- (1) 8 ft x 10 ft shade cloth (I used 30% shade cloth)
🏗️ Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Prep the Area:
Measure and mark out an 8 ft x 10 ft space in your garden. Clear the area at the four corners where vertical poles will go.
2. Cut the Pipes:
- Cut six 10 ft EMT pipe to 8 ft pieces (These are the vertical poles and short sides)
- Use the other two 10 ft pipes as-is for the long sides.
- Want more height and width? You can use full 10 ft EMTs instead—choose what works best for your garden.
3. (Optional) Paint the Frame:
Spray paint the pipes and fittings if you so desire. I painted mine tan to reduce the metallic shine.
4. Assemble the Ends:
- Use 3-way connectors to attach two vertical poles to one 8 ft horizontal pipe, forming an upside-down “U.”
- Repeat to make the second side of the frame.
5. Anchor the Frame:
- Hammer the rebar about 1–1.5 ft into the ground at each corner.
6. Set and Connect:
- Slide the vertical poles over the rebar for stability.
- Connect both ends using the 10 ft EMT pipes as top rails.
7. Add Shade Cloth:
- Drape your 8 ft x 10 ft shade cloth over the top and secure it with bungee cords or zip ties.
